We need more Doctors

GS 3: Economy

Context

Due to the dearth of government medical schools and the scarcity of medical graduates in India, there is a growing need to advance equality by encouraging migration to underprivileged areas and giving scale-friendly regulations precedence over production constraints in order to support sustainable growth.

Inequality Between Supply and Demand in Medical Education

· Lack of availability: There is a greater need for doctors than there are places in medical schools.

· Fewer doctor graduates: India's doctor-per-population ratio is lower than that of other countries, even though the country has seen significant expansion in medical colleges and seats.

· Lack of Infrastructure: Due to budgetary and regulatory limitations, small medical colleges are unable to grow.

Limitations Impacting Both Public and Private Universities

· Obstacles: Both private and public medical schools deal with staffing shortages and other scalability issues.

· More money is needed: Although government colleges are less expensive, their high overhead must be covered by subsidies.

· Reducing the cost of medical education requires both technological integration and regulatory changes, which are essential for efficiency gains.

The Urban-Rural Divide

· Juggling Scale, Equity, and Quality: Maintaining doctor quality is the goal of competency-based curriculum, which affects scalability restrictions.

· Productivity must be increased. The US model shows how creative teaching strategies and efficient use of resources may do this.

· Doctors' migration and urbanization: The National Medical Commission, which prioritizes equality above scale, may experience inefficiencies as a result of interstate doctor movement.
