UN report on groundwater extraction: Every drop counts

GS 3: Environment

Context

According to a UN report, the first step in encouraging people to manage aquifers responsibly may be the use of technologies that let them keep an eye on the water level in their borewells.

Condition of Aquifers:

· According to new research from UNU, 27 of India's 31 aquifers are depleting more quickly than they can be replenished.

· Previous research, like the Mihir Shah Committee report, showed how little is known about river systems and how they relate to groundwater quality.

· The Union Jal Shakti Ministry launched programs like the Atal Bhujal Yojana in 78 districts that are water-stressed to address the problem. In 2020, this program was launched with the goal of changing behavior in seven states; however, more work is needed to address the crisis.

India's Overuse of Groundwater:

· India is the world's largest extractor of groundwater, obtaining roughly 70% of its water needs from borewells and tubewells.

· Although food security was encouraged by these sources, creative approaches to water management have not received as much attention.

· Power subsidies have been connected to well overexploitation in states like Punjab, where 78% of wells are overexploited.

Relationship between Behavioral Shifts and the Climate Crisis:

· Researchers have linked the depletion of groundwater supplies to the climate crisis, particularly in areas such as the southwest where recharging is restricted by hard rock aquifers.

· The government has been actively promoting efficient irrigation techniques and less water-intensive crops like millets.

· Promoting technology that enables people to keep an eye on their borewells could lead to crucial behavioral changes that are necessary to promote responsible aquifer management.
