The cult of operational superiority, from Israel to India

GS 2: International Relations

Context

Using only military force to neutralize a threat may be effective in the short term, but it eventually backfires when the enemy realizes that common people are at risk during any conflict.

Israel's Security Policy Collapse

· Historical Mirage: Israel's military might give the country the appearance of invincibility, but more recent events have exposed flaws and raised dangers.

· Limited Air Campaigns: There was no long-term political strategy behind Israel's sporadic strikes on Gaza, which were intended to reduce militant capabilities.

· Netanyahu's Strategy: By giving up on the two-state solution, Netanyahu weakened the Palestinian Authority and prolonged the conflict by using divisive tactics that favored extremists.

Operational Superiority's Drawbacks

· Israel's Misconception: By focusing only on its operational superiority, Israel ignored the political underpinnings of the conflict, creating space for counterattacks.

· India's Approach to Pakistan: Like Israel, India gave military might precedence over diplomatic compromise when interacting with Pakistan.

· Kashmir Standoff: By removing Jammu and Kashmir's autonomy, India demonstrated that they were unwilling to compromise, which hampered any chance of diplomatic advancement.

Accepting Political Remedies

· Advantages of Dialogue: As evidenced by previous rapprochements between former enemies, diplomacy can reduce tensions even though it is not a panacea.

· Possible Benefits for Pakistan Talking things out can encourage Pakistan to work toward economic stability and disassociate itself from extremist groups.

· Taking Care of Bigger Issues: Political processes can open doors for initiatives aimed at fostering mutual trust, collaboration on common problems, and economic expansion.
