Context
After almost a decade, the Rashtriya Gokul Mission—India's leading effort to improve indigenous cow breeds—has run into a peculiar roadblock. The project's original goal was to raise the standard of all native breeds; instead, it has helped popularize one native variation, the Gir cow, across the country. Should this trend persist, it could jeopardize the integrity of indigenous breeds across the country.
About the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM)
• The initiative is carried out under a revised and restructured Department plan from 2021–2022 to 2025–2026, with an allocation of Rs. 2400 crore.
• RGM information about the Nationwide Artificial Insemination Program is available in the Information Network on Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH) database.
• The Department of Dairy and Animal Husbandry is in charge of carrying out the scheme.

• Importance: Increasing cow productivity and milk yield is essential to the program's success in providing more milk to the country's rural farmers and boosting the dairy industry's profitability.
