Why in News?
India has ranked 127 in the Global Gender Gap Index of 2023.
Key Points: • India has climbed 8 places in the Global Gender Gap when compared to 2022 report.
• It has ranked 135 in 2022.
• The country had closed 64.3% of the overall gender gap.
• Iceland ranked top for the 14th consecutive year.
• It is the only one to have closed more than 90% of its gender gap.
Global Gender Gap Index:
• It is released by the World Economic Forum which was started in the year 2006.
• It mentions about the progress of countries towards gender parity.
• It uses 4 dimensions:
1. Economic Participations and Opportunity
2. Educational Attainment
3. Health and Survival
4. Political Empowerment
• On each dimension the GGG index provides score between 0 and 1. • The score 1 indicates full gender parity whereas 0 indicates complete imparity.
Objectives:
• To decrease the gap between women and men on health, education, economy and polity.
• Through this index each country will are able to set priorities for the empowerment of women. Indian initiatives to reduce the gender gap:
• Beti Bachao Beti Padhao for the protection and education of the children
• Mahila Shakti Kendras to empower rural women
• Mahila Police Volunteers for the engagement of Mahila Police Volunteers in the state.
• Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to economically empower by opening their bank accounts. World Economic Forum:

• It was established in the year 1971 as a not-for-profit foundation
